Volume per unit of time is how flow is measured. However, the air is easily compressed, and its volume varies with temperature and pressure. As a result, FAD refers to the amount of free air taken into the compressor vs the amount of compressed air delivered by the compressor at its compressed air exit. FAD works with volumetric flow units like m3/min and l/s.

Industrial air compressors with 200 HP may reach an airflow of over 1,000 CFM at 100 PSI, but small, mobile at-home air compressors may only deliver around 2 CFM.
